Family farmstay holidays are ideal for children.  The accommodation is basic and the host families are all used to children.  Most have children of their own, who will be only too happy to make friends with their junior guests.  Young tourists enjoy getting their hands dirty planting the trees that are included in the price of family farmstay accommodation.

Adventure activities can be adapted to suit the needs of the family and the age of the children.  A gentle horseride is a fun way for children to travel and avoids complaints about walking up hills!  Children enjoy splashing in rivers or waterfalls and a raft journey will be a highlight of a family farmstay holiday that will be remembered for years to come.  Nightfall is early in Ecuador, around 6.30p.m., so even the youngest children can stay up late enough for the adventure of a short guided night walk in the tropical forest with its luminous insects and exotic sounds.

For younger children, just being on the farm is an adventure in itself, with all sorts of farm animals to watch, feed or pet.  Pigs, chickens, cows, donkeys and guinea pigs are all common on farms in Ecuador, and most homes have kittens and puppies around as well.  Picking your own oranges or bananas is very satisfying and helping with the process of making chocolate, from picking the fruits through drying, toasting and grinding the beans, is enjoyed by children of all ages up to about 90.

Wildlife tours for children are fun and interactive, for example bug safaris to find large but harmless beetles, brightly coloured butterflies, grasshoppers, fireflies and other mini-beasts that hop, fly or glow in the night.  A walk along the river provides child-friendly entertainment in the form of frogs and frogspawn, catfish that can be caught by hand and various different birds that come to the river to drink.  Geckos and lizards are harmless and fun to watch as they hunt insects.
